Traces is a collaborative piece of performance work between sound artist Rachel Sedman and dancers Maria Popova and Steph Donaghue. It explores themes of renewal, preservation and embodiment through movement and touches on the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi wherein the repair of broken elements are made transparent and celebrated as part of an objects history. Dance and mark making leave traces of connection and
contemplation within the materiality of the salt used. The use of sound within the work ranges from the audible sound of dancers feet over the salt, to environmental recorded sounds, internal heart rhythm sounds and a created soundtrack using sounds of a glass harp.
The chosen images show the traces of human marks made after the performance has ended. This body of work includes a film of the dance performance.
